Black People Who Survived A Scary Movie: Kelly Jo Minter
This one is special because this lady has survived TWO scary movies! Not one but TWO! That’s special (and her story is even scarier).
Actress Kelly Jo Minter was first seen as Rocky Dennis’ girlfriend/Prostitute in the movie Mask starring Cher and Eric Stoltz. Now to some this would be considered a scary movie but I digress. Her first horror film role was as Yvonne in the fifth installment of the Nightmare on Elm Street series. Yvonne was the street smart high graduate who somehow escapes Freddy Kruger’s finger blades and helps saves the day. The main character Alice (who survived TWO Freddy films which is an accomplishment itself) needed Yvonne to free the soul of Freddy’s mom to defeat him. Yvonne did her job and the day was saved! Yvonne makes black history as the only African-American from Elm Street to survive Kruger’s clutches. Congrats.

After a bit of a hiatus, we’re back screening films in the Somerville Theater. In honor of Chocolate, Flowers & Greeting Card Day, this is a special “couples” event where we combine our love for the gooey macabre with the titilating. For our feature film, we present PINUP GIRLS ON ICE. It’s an old school slasher where a rough and tumble burlesque troop take a break from breaking hearts and kneecaps in order to help out a friend with a bachelor party. Unfortunately for our bevy of beauties, there’s an uninvited guest. MOE is a raging psychopath with a fetish for putting girls on ice (literally) in this grisly, pull-no-punches gorefest. We also have a shorts program with two films right now with one more potentially on tap. LEGITIMATE A corrupt senator has the tables turned on him when his night of carousing goes awry. I AM MONSTER Necrophilia has never been so sexy. EROTICIDE (U.S. Premiere) A love triangle has the potential for tragedy as a man finds himself torn between his loving girlfriend and his cruel, twisted ex-dominatrix. We’re hoping to add a couple neat wrinkles and promotions with this one. Stay tuned, we’ll update you with more. We’d like to thank everyone that has supported our events these past four (!!!) years and we’re looking forward to this being our best year of indie horror screenings yet.

they outlawed this move just because she was the only woman who could do it.
Surya Bonaly was infamous for (among other things) doing aone blade backflip in the 1998 Olympics, and is the ONLY figure skater who’s ever pulled that off. Not just the only woman, the only figure skater PERIOD. There’s like all ofthree Olympic-class male skaters who did backflips in their routines, and NONE of them could do it one blade.
But wait, there’s more.
Backflips were banned from the 1976 Olympics onward on the official justification that skating jumps are supposed to be landed on one blade, whereas backflips are landed on both blades. The unofficial justification was it was too dangerous, both to the athlete and to the rink — if you didn’t land it perfectly, you could not only break your ankle, but also punch THROUGH the ice surface.
Surya Bonaly was openly contemptuous of the figure skating judges, because they were a bunch of openly racist white men who always screwed her over by giving her lower scores than she deserved. That one-blade backflip was her ultimate FUCK YOU! to the Olympics judges, because she took an “illegal” backflip and made it legal by landing it on one blade. Pretty much DARING them to mark her down for being epic awesome and pulling a move that their precious coddled white girls didn’t have the guts to even think about.
They did, of course. White racism knows no bounds. But she utterly owned them with that move.
