Ole Ukena | on Tumblr - Burnout Syndrome. Burned matches, canvas, 80x80 cm (2012)

Over 9000 matches stuck on a canvas to write the word “work” over and over again. While the first matches are still completly intact the last ones are gradually more and more burned down leaving traces of smoke. The piece can be read as a commentary on the habit to overwork and this resulting in depression or physical problems.

“I think it is important for us to have an edge and in some circumstances to be able to choose films that are maybe controversial and hard for other festivals and still maybe put them in the mix with those bigger or conventional films.”

I applaud you, Chris.

I was going to reblog a different post about how absolutely appalling everything about the US cover is, but this is better.  this is a movie about four (real!!) kickass black ladies and the US cover puts a white male secondary supporting character front and center s e r i o u s ly

bonus: is the kickass black ladies are real people who really existed and the white guy isn’t even real he’s literally an invented character

That fact deserves to be celebrated. Hiding those women and the colour of their skin under a veil of blue in a ridiculously photoshopped background – behind a man – is absurd. The actresses’ names are Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Sharri Sebens and Miranda Tapsell. They are women. They are indigenous. And they are the stars of this movie. That should be a selling point, not something pushed into the background.”

JUST THE TEN OF US

Episode: Heartbreaker (Season 3, aired 3/30/90)

Episode Summary: When a patron (Rick Potter) at Danny’s drops dead at Marie’s (Heather Langenkamp) feet during her solo performance, she blames herself for killing him. Then she learns that he left her all his worldly possessions, although she didn’t know him. Marie becomes confused and wonders if her purpose in life is “to please men.” 

After burning the bulk of her wardrobe in a hobo’s barrel in the backyard and committing to a life of chastity, Elizabeth (Deborah Harmon) convinces Marie to let herself off of the hook and loosen up a little.

The contents of Rick Potter’s inheritance box are: ship in a bottle, baseball cards, a toupee (that JR offers $6.00 for), and an appointment book that was only filled out for Fridays, “beer, pizza, Marie”

Memorable Dialogue:

Marie (to Elizabeth): I just don’t know what God wants me to do.

Elizabeth: Just listen carefully, Marie.  God doesn’t always shout, sometimes he whispers.

(At this point Marie decides to unbutton several of her sweater buttons; after the third button is undone, a loud clap of thunder is heard and Marie determines that God is telling her two buttons is enough — which I always took to mean that God doesn’t mind some mild, suggestive, promiscuity, however, I’m not sure if that is exactly what the writers were intending….or God, for that matter)
