The Viscera volunteer designation. Very pretty!

The festival is TODAY at the Egyptian in Los Angeles, California! If you’re not there, then you’re totally square.

In today’s behind the scenes photo, the cast prepare for the first day of shooting. Meanwhile, I am a leaf on the wind.

I’m going out of town soon and won’t be posting Stella Buio behind the scenes photos for a week and a half or so. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack that Shawn gave me over and over and I started recording foley stuff last night (made some goop for squishy sounds and they sound AWESOME.) Today has been an errand day, as will tomorrow I’m betting, so I don’t know how much work I’m going to get done. Maybe I can do some stuff before I leave.

In today’s behind the scenes photo, I think Linnea’s about to shoot me with her red eye lasers and I love the maniacal smile on Linnea’s face. She may not appreciate me posting it, but I love this picture! And I think Shawn is trying to River Tam me to death.

But you know what? It’s all good because we got some fantastic footage and a pretty good little flick (if I may say so myself.) In fact, my mom had a dream the other night that we’d gotten to make a feature version of the film. From your brain to the money god’s ears, mom!

I handed the cut over to Wheat last night for colour correction and I’m getting the score from my brother tomorrow. Today will be mainly sound design day! Whee!! Gotta head over to Whole Foods for my foley necessities… :D

Today’s behind the scenes focuses on Chris Cline, our wonderful zombie!

Very few of my non-filmmaker friends watch horror flicks and certainly haven’t seen the ones I watch religiously and draw a lot of inspiration from…except Chris!! He knows what I’m talking about when I bust out the Fulci and the Argento.

Stella Buio came about when he said to me one day at work that we should write a giallo together. The term giallo, for those who don’t know, refers to a type of Italian murder mystery film from the 60s-80s. They’re lurid and sumptuous, like the pulp novels for which the genre was named (“giallo” means “yellow” which was the colour of the cover on an Italian pulp mystery novel from those years.) Eventually, the term morphed into a catch-all for 70s/80s Italian horror as giallo directors like Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento moved into horror. (That’s the gist of the history of gialli, but I should say that I’m no scholar or expert.)

That night, I became possessed by the basic idea for Stella Buio. It wasn’t a proper giallo for more reasons than I’m an American who shot the film in Sarasota, Florida in 2012, but I wanted a Fulci-style (but he had to have humanity) zombie and stupidly gory effects and Bava / Argento lighting and with our budget and certain other restraints, I got most of that. :D The picture above (and the link to the trailer below) serve as proof as I continue to work feverishly on the film.
